Beth Thomas - Costa Rica Animal Rescue

Beth saw the opportunity to work with sloths as too good to miss! Working with her favourite animal day in day out was an amazing experience for her and she will never forget her time in Costa Rica. Although the lifestyle was initially a culture shock the people she met made her feel more than welcome. She already wants to go back!

Why did you choose this particular project?

I went there to meet my favourite animal in the entire world- sloths! I was not disappointed.

Which kind of work and activities did you do during your project?

So we prepped food for all the different animals, fixed the cages, cleaned the cages, did maintenance work on the grounds, made games/toys for the monkeys cages (for animal enrichment)
...all whilst having a baby sloth/baby kinkajou hanging off you! What a dream!

How did the culture and people differ to home, and what were the locals like?

The food was so different to back home out there.

What was the accommodation like?

We basically lived like Tarzan for month and boy did I like it.

What were the staff and other volunteers like?

The centre is an amazing place for the rescue and rehabilitation of the animals. The people that work there full time are hard-working and very happy people who are super friendly to all us volunteers despite me being absolutely diabolical at speaking Spanish. The fellow volunteers I met over there were lovely folks and I wouldn't hesitate to go back again.

What was your most amazing moment or your best memory?

As soon as I arrived a three-toed sloth was in my arms and I was feeding it its favourite leaves from the Cecropia tree. I honestly had tears of joy in my eyes. I love them so much. We also released sloths into the wild again and that was honestly one of the best moments of my life. Truly awesome!

Any tips and advice you might like to pass on to future volunteers?

I would say embrace it! Definitely don’t be afraid get your hands dirty and you will be rewarded- the sloths will love you. Long live the sloths

What do you have planned next?

I’m planning on returning next year. You must go!

Anything else you would like to add?

I had an absolutely superb time on the project!
