I’m now at the end of my placement here, and what an experience it has been! For the past month, I’ve been a Research Officer for the marine conservation and diving project on the Frontier camp based on Mafia Island, Tanzania.

A Diving  Blog

I’ve been at the Frontier camp on Mafia Island for one week now and it’s been amazing! Before coming here, I’d never been scuba diving before, and now, it’s only one week in and I’m an Advanced Open Water diver! Over these past four days, I’ve done 9 dives, so it’s been pretty intense but I’ve loved every minute of it.

Settling Into Life In  Tanzania

I arrived on the 1st of May with my brother and was met in the airport by Rama and Jason wearing a Frontier t-shirt. The ride to camp was in a tuk tuk, it was the first time I had properly seen Africa, it really was breath taking.

Patrolling The Bay In Mafia Island Marine  Park

Our day starts with getting up at roughly 05:30. After getting our gear ready (notepad, binoculars, phones) we walk down to Big Blu to meet with a member of the marine park team and the boat captain. Once we have checked the boat is ready to go (fuel, lifejackets etc.) we head out into the bay, usually shortly after 06:00.

Trip To  Mewe

We walked down to the beach and got into a little boat which ferried us across to Chole Island. We were met there by Maya and her parents Jean and Anne, and Nicki too.
