From Intern to  Coordinator

 

Finishing uni, I had no idea where I would end up next. I knew I loved travelling (but who doesn’t, right?) and had a fair bit of travel experience, but had no idea this could end up helping me get an internship.

I came across Frontier and could really relate to what the company stood for. Conservation, non-profit, encouraging young people to step outside their comfort zone were all things I agreed with. The events and marketing position seemed like a no-brainer for me; I had been part of many charity societies at university for which we needed to fundraise and events plan and I loved being an organiser! I also really enjoyed speaking with young people discussing my travel experiences, so the idea of working in outreach events seemed perfect for me.

The fact that you were encouraged with a subsidised trip abroad upon finishing your internship was a real winner. I had been planning on working bar jobs for 6 months in order to raise the money to travel; so why not be working in something more worthwhile to get a similar outcome?

Of course I had a great time during my internship; speaking with students about travel, organising contacts lists and putting my thoughts forward to change some of the marketing materials and strategies were really enjoyable. But I also learned so much during my 3 months. I’d had some previous office experience but nothing to this extent; after the first month I was unbelievably more confident with general office tasks such as using Excel and laminators; not to mention learning how to really engage with new people and successfully market the same product to very different types of people. I went from being shaking with nerves (literally – I could hardly move my mouse) on my first consultation phone call to teaching new interns this process 8 weeks later.

It was good timing that a full time position became available at the same time my internship was coming to an end, but I’d like to think I also deserved the positon of Events and Outreach Coordinator. I had really improved and had room to input my own ideas to the department during my internship, and was so pleased when I was offered the role I am in now. Although it meant that I wasn’t able to go out as a staff member to Fiji (my original plan), that position will always be there. For the moment though, I’m making my mark on the events team and continuing to improve my own skills set in this position.
