Highlights from the Fiji Healthcare  Project

For my second week in Fiji, I was helping to run a summer programme at Suva Special Needs School and then in afternoons I went to Hilton Hostel to sit with the children there. At the Hilton Hostel, I was introduced to all of the children that were going to be there each day during their two week school holiday. This allowed them to recognise me and feel more comfortable when I went to visit again.

For my first afternoon at Hilton Hostel, I sat down with some of the children helping them to colour in pictures and also helping the come up with their own designs. I then had conversations with two girls who were deaf through writing things down on paper, and we got to know one another. We also put on some music for the other people staying in the hostel who didn’t have as much control of their actions or means of communications, but they did enjoy listening to music and it was great to see them smiling.

I then showed the two girls my phone and how to use the app Snapchat and all of the funny effects that come with it. They really enjoyed this and the way the effects made their faces look. It also made the other children smile slightly as the girls went round taking photos of everyone.

I went to the Hilton Hostel for a week and on my last day, the four children who I had spent most time with didn’t want me to leave and wanted me to come back another day.
