Everyone knows about the conservation story of the Panda, Orangutan and Elephant, yet despite the planet current mass extinction occurring, little is discussed in the mainstream media about the less cuddly species going extinct. We investigate whether flagship species actually aid in the conservation of all threatened species.

Pandas. What are they good for? Large, lethargic creatures who lie around eating nothing but bamboo all day and have no interest in sex. It’s like they’re asking to become extinct. So should we just sit back and let it happen? Or does the survival of the panda represent something important about the larger issue of environmental conservation?

At the end of last year, Tian Tian and Yang Guang, two giant pandas from China made the long journey to their new home at Edinburgh Zoo in an attempt to help conserve this currently endangered species. However, Edinburgh Zoo has been struggling over the past few years and many animal rights groups believe the move is for purely commercial reasons. Is the zoo concerned with the Pandas welfare as a species? Or do they just want to improve their own fortune?
