Extinct: last Pinta giant tortoise, Lonesome George, passes away

He had been heralded as a conservation icon but on Sunday 25 June 2012 Lonesome George, the last Pinta giant tortoise, died in his corral at the Tortoise Center in the Galapagos National Park. The subspecies is now considered extinct.
