How To Travel And Get Back To Nature

One of the greatest perks of travelling can be rediscovering the inner cave man. It can give us the chance to reach back into our species roots, go back to basics and become one with the earth again. It’s relaxing, enriching and downright enjoyable. Here are the best ways to get back to nature when you travel.

Camp –

Hotels and hostels are easy pickings these days, with apps, sites and local guides bursting at the seams with different places to stay. We like that sort of accommodation for the ease and convenience of it. Having everything provided for you without needing to think too much. Trying a bit harder with accommodation brings its own rewards though. For starters, no hotel or hostel would be able to get you the rustic and back to basics feel that camping would, and it’s a way of becoming part of where you are, rather than looking through a window at it. Sure you have to worry about camping stuff but those little nuggets of self reliance just make it all the more enriching. Obviously you face certain dangers camping that you don’t have while staying in a hotel, so that needs to be researched before you go. All in all though, it’s a far more personal experience, entrenching you in the landscape and environment you’re travelling through.

Leave the car behind and don’t take busses unless practicality dictates you should. Where possible, move around in ways like cycling or walking. That way you move around entirely on your own power and your own ease, not having to be handcuffed by timetables, money or deadlines. You also don’t want the noise of a car when you’re trying to see elusive wild animals. Walking your way around an African national park that’s full of Lions might not be sensible of course but again that’s down to just finding out what the limits are of where you’re going. If you can walk or cycle, then do. You move through your environment much slower, taking in all around you. You just blend in as yet another part of the landscape, rather than riding rough shod over it.

If you’re really trying to get off the beaten track on your travels then chances are you will have no choice but to eat locally. That’s great though, as most remote places heavily rely on what is found or foraged for their food. It’s an avenue into the local culture and tradition, as food is a way of marking the seasons, each of which has its own meanings and customs. Eating local food immerses you entirely in your travelling experience and the individuality of the natural environment you’re in. Most diets around the world are still born out of what’s naturally available then and there, so getting stuck in plonks you right down in the middle of that natural environment. Going to Nepal and living on McDonald’s leaves one half of you at home, instead of jumping head first. Really, why were you going travelling if not to experience things like this?

Most people today settle down with headphones for the long grind of whatever they’re about to do, be it a piece of work or a long journey. Doing that while you travel though means you shut off to so much going on around you. It’s like having the T.V on in the background, what’s the point? Take the headphones out and listen to the natural world around you while you pass through it. It may sound strange, but letting your ears take over when you’re in the great outdoors helps you see things a bit better.

It’s not necessarily about finding your centre or understanding your soul, it’s just about getting the most out of where you are and what you’re doing. If that’s not the point of travelling, then what is?
