How to pack a green lunch 

You may think you are being resourceful by packing your own lunch, but a brown paper bag lunch can produce staggering amounts of waste – from plastic bottles to aluminium wrap and non-degradable wrappers.

Preparing a waste free lunch is not only beneficial for the environment, it can save you a lot of money over the course of a year, and your body will thank you for it.

Make your colleagues or fellow students envious with home cooked lunches as in this case it really is easy to be green.

Here are six easy steps to help prepare a 100 per cent green meal.

Pack reusable items

Forget carrying a brown paper back or plastic shopper bag. Opt for a reusable lunch box, such as an insulated canvas bag. Replace all disposable wrapping with containers, and use reusable items such as cloth napkins, a thermos and cutlery.

Don’t let food go to waste

 Avoid food wastage by using leftovers for lunch the next day. Any food that you don’t get around to eating can also be preserved for the following lunch.

Buy unpackaged foods

Instead of buying individually wrapper items or pre-packaged fruits and veggies, purchase your week’s supply of groceries from home. Despite the convenience, pre-packaged foods create excessive amounts of waste and are more expensive.


Dispose of any waste thoughtfully – if plastics and aluminium are unavoidable when you’re on the go, be sure to put them in the correct recycling bin or take it home with you.

Buy in bulk

Purchase foods such as cheese, biscuits, nuts and dried fruit in bulk and make up your own snacks. There are hundreds of websites dedicated to lunchbox ideas and recipes. You can make up your own trail mix, fresh salads and gourmet sandwiches.

Start a compost

Compost fruit and vegetable scraps at home, to help foster fertile soil.
