South American Style

Winter is coming but, never fear, there is a way to keep the summer alive. Give your winter wardrobe a South American twist. Trade in your traditional jeans, barbours  and duffles for warm and comfy Andes-inspired alternatives from Peruvian Connection, the Andes’ answer to FCUK.

If you want to combine comfort with glamour I’d suggest the Baby Alpaca Links Hooded Zip Jacket which comes in a number of subtle colours. Although it may be a bit of an investment at £159, it is also a stylish and luxurious upgrade from your average hoody; knitted from baby alpaca and styled with raglan sleeves, zip placket and a sporty deep hood. The style of clothes stocked in the winter 2011 catalogue are reminiscent of those stocked in the popular high-street shop All Saints with many dark, and edgy colours, floor-sweeping dresses and cardigans, replicated vintage jewellery and asymmetrical hems; and the prices don’t differ by much.

As taught by style-guru Alexa Chung, you should always accessorize a plain, monochrome t-shirt and shorts with bold jewellery. On occasions, Alexa’s rule tends to go along the lines of the bolder the better and in the past she has sported a huge eye-ball and children’s kaleidoscope in the shape of a bird around her neck. Applying this rule, why not buy something thrifty like a small handmade musical instrument from Tumi Crafts Retail Shop and attach a string to it. Tumi imports and sells a wide range of fair trade products from countries across Latin America, this Mini Bobo Drum is hand made from bamboo and imported from Ecuador and is a great, original accessory at just £4.95.

Whilst I’m not going to advise running off and getting a poncho, because hopefully they are not making a comeback anytime soon, you can still get involved with original South American fashion in the shape of a Peruvian bobble hat. This style has slipped its way comfortably into western society, with fashion-conscious celebrities sporting the style such as Lily Allen and Fearne Cotton, and with the hat being available in a number of styles on the online shopping site ASOS, I’d go for the  Twisted Yarn Peruvian Bobble Hat at £15.00.
