Shark-Ray Alley

A regular stop site for many tour operators, or in this case whilst PADI dive training! Shark-Ray Alley is a common tourist attraction known for, you guessed it, Sharks and Rays. Typical species found here are the Nurse Shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and Southern Stingray (Dasyatis americana).

Lobster Grill-up!

Since the lobster fishing season is now open, one of the Fisheries Department rangers promised he would grill up some lobsters for us to know how to prepare them in the future. We didn't realize it would look (and taste) as amazing as this! After a long week of theory and dive training the group was ecstatic for this Friday's party night.

Survey time!

We had some time in town this morning while some of our volunteers caught up on dive training. These girls decided to refresh their fish ID skills before their test this week. Good effort! I'm sure they'll do fine!

Lionfish

Lionfish are an invasive species in the Caribbean. They cause competition with endemic reef fish species by utilizing resources and feeding on juvenile and smaller sized fishes. The annual lobster fest is happening next weekend here on Caye Caulker, and the Fisheries Department will be occupying an information booth for locals and tourists alike. This year, the Department is also holding a lionfish tournament to involve/inform the community on the species' status. Moreover, they will be demonstrating how to properly prepare the fish (the stingers can be tricky) and be handing out samples!
